Crafting for the Craftily Challenged Pt. 4
This month I ventured into the amazing world of sewing at Sew Crafty Houston. I took my first sewing class and I can’t wait for more! The Intro to Sewing class with Abby Wright! was the perfect course for a complete beginner (like myself) and great for those needing a quick refresher. The class taught me everything I needed to know to get started in the realm of sewing— from the different types of fabrics and scissors to step by step instruction on threading a machine and sewing straight stitches.
I must admit I was a little nervous at using a sewing machine considering that that my method of sewing involved staplers and hot glue guns, but all fears were set aside during the class. The small class size and extreme patience of the instructor made it so easy to keep up. Now I’m ready to tackle another project. Any ideas?
This may sound a bit cheesy, but the feeling of knowing that I actually made something start to finish without losing any fingers or any other injury is pretty inspiring. If you want to be inspired and make something crafty come join us at Sew Crafty Houston. See our June class schedule here!
Happy Crafting!
Supplies, Supplies!
What does a beginner need when they want to take on sewing, in addition to a decent machine? Click on the photo for more information!
Etsy Sunday - Moop!
What’s Moop? No I didn’t misspell mop, Moop is one of my favorite sellers on Etsy! They specialize in finely-crafted bags, wallets and other accessories - they are the originators of Etsy’s’ “It” bag, which is a large tote with top panels and pleats. It’s soooo freakin’ cute and really well made - a deadly combination when it comes to online shopping…

Tote Swap - Are You In?
It’s fun, it’s free and it’s here - time for the Sew Crafty Tote Swap!
Join us for super fun tote swap - an event where you make or decorate a pre-made tote for another crafter while they make/decorate one for you!
Here’s how you can be a part of our tote-ally awesome swap (yes I know it’s ridiculous that I just said tote-ally):
1) Check your calendar! The craft swap party will be on June 20th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (wine and snacks - woot!).
2) Send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with your name, your favorite/least favorite color and anything of note (examples: I have long arms and need long straps, I hate cotton, please make something with a dinosaur on it because I love them, etc.).
3) Wait for your swap partner email - we will send them out after the swap closes on May 23!
4) Come to the party, get/give your goods and have a glass of wine!
Swapping is so fun - it’s easy, you get to make something and then you get something handmade for you! Join us!
Zippers, Darts and Pleats - Oh My!
They go bump in the night - those pesky little tasks that make beginning crafters break out into a cold sweat. When I talk with many of our students, I am surprised to hear that they are scared of sewing zippers, pleats and darts!
Don’t be scared sewing newbies! Just like anything else in sewing these three items require a little bit of know how, but are not in any way out of your reach. That’s why the June Pattern-O-Rama class is The Betsy Ross Girlie Dress (formerly known as the simple dress because, well, it’s simple!).
This pattern has pleats, darts and a lapped zipper (whaaa?) plus it’s a very cute, wearable dress for Houston’s balmy summer. And the pattern is included in the class price - no having to order it or buy it from a retail shop - it’s there for you when you sign up and you get to take it home! YAY!
Check out the schedule to sign up!
Pattern-O-Rama - The Betsy Ross Simple Dress
Weekend - two class series (two 4 hour classes)
Dates: Sun 6/8/2008 - 6/15/2008
Time: 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM
I am currently making one for myself - I’ll post to Flicker when I finish!
Sarah
PS: Did you see Threadheads last week? They made an awesome shrug using an old turtleneck and a serger…
