This Ain’t an Apron, Honey!
That Ain’t An Apron Honey, That’s A Tool Belt
Recycle a pair of jeans into a crafty tool belt
Hi Folks! It’s Mo and I am hijacking the Sew Crafty Houston blog today. I wanted to share my latest project with you, a recycled jeans tool belt.
I teach the knitting classes here at Sew Crafty Houston and I always seem to have knitting needles in my pockets, a ball of yarn under my armpit and the ability to lose scissors, crochet hooks and pens while working with my students. I had the need for some mobile organization and a pair of jeans that were no longer fit to be worn in public. After adding some ribbon and pockets a tool belt was born! The backside of the jeans was left intact so I could use the back pockets for my phone and lip balm and the inside of the pants turns into a giant pocket for large items.
Here’s the back view (the side that will be against your belly):

For this project you’ll need:
• 1 pair of jeans
• Enough 1.5” wide ribbon to wrap around your waist twice with a few feet to spare
• 4 Heavy Duty Snaps (Tip!! Read the instructions on the package before you leave the store. Some snaps require the purchase of a separate setting tool.)
• ¼ Yard of fabric if you want to line the inside
• Standard sewing supplies (thread, needle, scissors, pins, sewing machine, seam ripper, etc…)
Disclaimer: I am not nor do I claim to be a professional seamstress. My sewing style could be described as Guerilla Tailoring at best. I’m assuming that anyone tackling this project has a basic understanding of sewing and will understand what I mean when I say, “...put the thingie over the thingie and sew them together…” Also, your measurements will vary from mine since you will probably use a different pant size so measure your tool belt and adjust accordingly.
Start off by ripping out the seam on the inside of the legs from ankle to ankle with a seam ripper or craft knife. Then rip out the seam from the center of the crotch up the front of the pants to where the zipper placket starts. Rip the seam from the center of the crotch up the back of the pants until you are even with the bottom of the back pockets.
You’ll notice that you can now lay the jeans completely flat on a table if you take one crotch flap and overlap the other crotch flap (giggle) on both the front and back of the jeans. I pinned the two crotch flaps on the front side of the jeans to lay flat and then ran a zigzag stitch over them on my machine. Repeat this for the backside.
Mark a horizontal line (hip to hip) about 1” down from the end of the zipper placket on the front of the pants. This is where the bottom of the tool belt will end up. Just be sure to check the back of the jeans to make sure you won’t be cutting off part of the back pockets.
Now, I like the frayed edges on cut off jeans. I’m short and don’t care to hem jeans. I just cut them off where I want to and let a couple of wash and dry cycles create that fabulous fringe. I sewed along the horizontal line and then cut off the legs about .5” down from the seam I just made. If you want to be fancy schmancy and turn your pieces inside out before sewing to hide rough edges, more power to ya. For those Guerilla Tailors out there just sew and move on.
To create the large pocket that goes across the front of the pants, measure your tool belt and determine the best height and width to cover the front of the pants and then cut a piece of denim from the discarded legs of your jeans. Before attaching this pocket I used about 6” of ribbon to create loops to hang tools. To create the ribbon loops I pinned the ribbon over some knitting needles and scissors, removed them and sewed where the pins were.
Attach the pocket to the front by pinning it in place and sewing around the bottom and two sides. I segmented the large pocket by sewing a couple of vertical seams about 4” apart. Be careful not to stitch over the existing front pockets. Pull the pocket liners out so you don’t accidentally sew them closed.
Install your snaps on the waistband of the jeans according to the manufacturer’s instructions. I placed mine between the edges and the belt loops and the button. The snaps will allow you to close up the large interior pocket and keep yarn and rulers from going AWOL.
Here’s a close up of the large interior pocket complete with a groovy liner fabric:

If you want to line the inside of your tool belt measure the height from the bottom of the waistband to the bottom seam and then the width. Double up the height measurement and add 1” to that number and the width measurement for a seam allowance. Cut a piece of fabric to these measurements.
Fold the liner fabric along the width with the right sides facing each other and sew with a .5” seam allowance on the two sides. Take the top of the liner and fold it outward and down 1”. Insert the liner fabric into your tool belt with the wrong sides facing each other and pin in place with the edge of the liner just touching the bottom of the waistband. I found it easier to hand stitch the liner in place. I didn’t want the adventure of trying to sew over the zipper.
Here’s a close up of how I dealt with the button flap:

For the strap take the rest of your ribbon and thread it through the belt loops on the back of the jeans. With your sewing machine stitch a few vertical lines near the belt loops to lock it in place.
Now add some flair with iron on patches and pins and start stuffing your tool belt full of markers and scissors and get crafty!

Hello Friends!
Thanks to an epic computer crash last week, Tip Tuesday is on hiatus until next Tuesday - hopefully I’ll have a fully functioning computer by then!
Tip Tuesday - Irish Cupcakes!
You can tell that I’m Irish by looking at me. Translucent skin, reddish hair and green eyes - I’m a lass straight out of the old country! Which brings me to St. Patrick’s Day - the day when the world goes Irish in bars all around the country. Wanna celebrate in style? Make some Irish Cupcakes to share with your friends and family - Sláinte!
Tip Tuesday - Irish Cupcakes from Sew Crafty on Vimeo.
Ingredients
Cake:
* 1 cup Guinness
* 1 stick, plus 1 tb, unsalted butter
* 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
* 2 cups dark brown sugar
* 3/4 cup sour cream
* 2 eggs
* 1 tb vanilla extract
* 2 cups flour
* 2 1/2 tsp baking soda
Frosting:
* 2 cups of confectioners sugar
* 2 sticks butter
* Splash of Baileys and Jameson
* Splash of vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cupcake pans (recipe makes 20 - 24)
2. Sift together flour, baking soda and cocoa
3. Create Guinness sauce - add butter, sliced into 1 tsp chunks, into the cup of Guinness to a skillet or sauce pot. Then add brown sugar and reduce 1/4 (boil for 4 - 5 minutes). You will have to watch so it doesn’t boil over!
4. Whisk eggs, sour cream and vanilla. Add to Guinness sauce.
5. Mix everything together well - don’t forget to scrape the sides of the bowl down as you mix!
6. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes - checking after 10 minutes (done means putting a toothpick in and it coming out clean)
7. Set aside to cool and start on the frosting.
8. Whip 2 sticks of butter (at room temperature - leave out for at least an hour) and 2 cups of powdered/confectioners sugar.
9. Add a splash of both Bailey’s and Jameson plus a splash of vanilla extract
10. Frost your cupcakes - let them cool COMPLETELY before you do this. Otherwise, you’ll have melted frosting (it’s butter dude!)

Tip Tuesday - Beginning to Sew
This week we’re taking a bit of a breather from Tip Tuesday videos to bring you some solid advice about sewing from Colette Patterns and their faithful blog readers! If you have time. read on to her other posts - quite a lot of good info on sewing, vintage clothing and more!
My favorite: “Beginnings can be frustrating!” Very true - I always compare sewing to golf: you could spend your life doing this and still be frustrated (or as I like to say, challenged), which is what makes it awesome!

Happy New Year!
It’s a new year - a new reason to kick bad habits, to learn new things and to focus on new challenges! I don’t know about you, but I have picked up some bad crafting and blogging habits this year that I want to improve - here are a few of my resolutions:
1. Blog twice a week! We’re starting something new this year - Tip Tuesdays (where you can get some cool crafting tips with a tutorial!) and I can’t wait to get the first one ready for you guys!
2. Make a new project each week - notice I didn’t say “start.” If you’re like me at all, starting things is easy, but finishing projects is hard!
3. Keep my craft room clean - do you have dust bunnies and craft creep taking over your home too? Let’s keep it under control this year!
4. Pick projects that challenge me - I have make like 10 Birdie Slings this year, but the Liverpool Tunic scares me! Time to cut that baby and start stitching!
5. Craft with friends - to get this resolution rolling, we will starting offering potluck meetups at Sew Crafty each month! Stay tuned for dates…
What are some of your crafty resolutions? Let everybody know in the comments! Making them public might be just what you need to stay on track…

Day of the Dead!
This is the best time of the year. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, trumped only by the awesomeness that is Day of the Dead.
For those of you unfamiliar with the holiday, Day of the Dead (or Dia de Los Muertos if you habla the Espanol) is a wonderful holiday in Latin American cultures that celebrates the passing of loved ones by creating elaborate altars (called Ofrendas) to honor that person’s life. The idea is that the dead return to their homes, enjoy earthly pleasures like tequila and sweet bread, while their families dote on them, give them cool things like sugar skulls and enjoy each others company over memories of the dearly departed. Day of the Dead is colorful, devotional and full of family love - seriously, what better way to honor someone’s life than to gather in their memory!
One of my favorite parts of the holiday is making sugar skulls! These bright decorations can turn your ho hum mantle into a beautiful altar in 5 seconds flat!
Which is where Tobiah comes in.
This year our very own Licorice Tree (Tobiah the amazing - who is about to be a mama! Congrats girl!) is offering a sugar skull class!

Green Crafting with Ruthie!
Hi!
My name is Ruthie and I will be posting regularly about green crafting for Sew Crafty Houston. I am very excited for this opportunity because eco-friendly living, sustainability and lightening my footstep on the earth are very important values to me.
You may be wondering, what exactly is green crafting? Basically anything that we make, create, or invent that helps reduce our impact on the Earth could be considered a green crafts! Specifically, just like the catchy slogan, green crafting is all about reducing the amount of waste we produce, reusing items before they go to the dump and recycling materials to make cool new crafts!
I will present projects for all these concepts in future posts, but for today I want to start with one of the most obvious and important green crafts there is: the reusable grocery tote!
Reusable grocery bags are great way to reduce the number of plastic bags being produced and disposed of every year. Here are some hard facts about your common, innocent looking grocery bag:
- Production of plastic bags contributes to air pollution and energy consumption
- Four to five trillion plastic bags are manufactured each year
- Americans use over 380 billion polyethylene bags per year
- Americans throw away approximately 100 billion polyethylene bags per year
- Of those 100 billion plastic bags, 1% are recycled
- It takes 1000 years for polyethylene bags to break down
- As polyethylene breaks down, toxic substances leach into the soil and enter the food chain
- Plastic bags are often mistaken as food by marine mammals. 100,000 marine mammals die yearly by eating plastic bags
- Plastic bag choke landfills
- Plastic bags are carried by the wind into forests, ponds, rivers, and lakes
Read more facts at this site.
The good news is that is incredibly easy to prevent all the negative effects of plastic bags just by carrying your own reusable totes! Of course, we all own those $1 Kroger or Whole Foods reusable totes, but sometimes it’s just really difficult to remember to carry it with you. I’ve found it’s at lot easier to remember to carry a tote that you or your friend or child has made or helped make! Not only are you proud to do something great for the Earth, but also proud of the craftiness and beauty of a handmade tote!
If you don’t have enough time or skill to make your own tote, you can buy premade blank totes and embellish them with adorable decorations. In fact, you can do this right at Sew Crafty with our drop-in crafting studio (check out one of ours over to the left!)
If you love to sew, you’re in luck! There are several great websites with tutorials. This adorable tote with pocket by Sew Mama Sew, and this tutorial for a tote made out of an old t-shirt (recycled!) from Instructables are both available for free! Of course you can put “Tote bag tutorial” in the Google box and find hundreds of inventive and instructive sites and blogs.
And if you would like to learn to sew, don’t forget about our sewing classes. In Sewing Bootcamp you actually make a grocery tote out of adorable fabric. Check out our schedule online or give us a call to sign up!
Once you make your tote, use it with pride! Experience the joy of helping the planet while making something handmade and you will understand exactly what green crafting is all about.
Until next time, tread lightly!

It’s so cool to have tools like Facebook, Twitter and Flickr to keep in touch with the people in your community! But how can you create and maintain meaningful relationships with people through the internet, especially when you have a small business?

Enter Hands On Small Business, a series of lectures across the US (in 20 cities including Houston!) to help small businesses and entrepreneurs connect to others through social media. Sponsored by Kirtsy and Microsoft Office Live, these sessions are A) a completely awesome way to meet other business owners, B) going to be so much fun and C) totally free.

New Place, New Hours, New Bootcamps!
Hello there peeps!
We’re finally moved in to our brand spankin’ new spot on 19th St. and I’m really excited about all the cool stuff we’re going to be able to do in a bigger spot! More classes, more fun and more drool worthy craft items are already in the works, but we have made a few awesome changes worth noting:
New Hours: Sew Crafty will now be open from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday and Sundays noon to 6 p.m! Now when you want to visit we’ll be here!
New Bootcamp: We have just started adding new Sewing Bootcamps for the fall! One improvement that we have made (after some awesome feedback from our students) is to include materials for all the projects (Pillow, Tote and PJ pants!). The price for bootcamp has increased by $15 as a result, but it will be a lot more economical (instead of spending upwards of $25 to get quality fabric for your project, you get it for $10 less!) to get gorgeous fabric from us as part of your class than to hunt and gather on your lunch break! Yay all around!
New Classes: More new classes are coming soon, but some on the agenda are adorable Halloween Cocktail Hats, Workshops on Amy Butler patterns, Mod Kid patterns and some very special holiday classes geared toward getting your gifts made, wrapped and done before someone gives you a Partridge in a Pear Tree…
Check your inbox for more details - coming soon! *Photo by Cosmopolitician

Crafting for the Craftily Challenged Pt. 6

This month I decided to take on another sewing project. I made an adorable tote bag and managed to keep all my fingers and sanity. Armed with a sewing machine, scissors and of course Hello Kitty band-aids (just in case), I was able to actually construct a sturdy functional tote bag. The project took about three hours to make and was not as hard as I expected. Looks like I am not as “craftily challenged” as I thought.
If you ever want to make a project but don’t have the space or supplies— like scissors, a sewing machine, cutting boards I highly recommend taking advantage of Open Sewing Lounge at Sew Crafty. For just five bucks you get plenty of space to work and access to great machines and other supplies. Just check out our calendar for times and dates!
I’m Back!
Howdy there peeps! We are finally stateside after a long trip to the UK - more details on all things awesome in my Crafty Guide to the UK, coming soon! For now, check our Mr. Sew Crafty on the bagpipes!
Etsy Sunday - London Calling!
Whew - here we are! My favorite city in the world, after Houston naturally (seriously, it’s ok to heart Houston people - have some pride!), is filled to the brim with creative and awesome people!
First up, Miss Bumbles, who specializes in adorable felted animals, people and photo greeting cards of whimsical scenes. I want to buy all of these and decorate my sewing room at home with them - or make some in our next Needle Felting class!
Hats have been on the brain lately - we made some for the Kentucky Derby this year and we will most certainly have a hat decorating tea party during the holidays - which is why I was attracted to Tied and Feathered’s perfect veiled fascinators!
That’s it for your UK Etsy Sunday series - I have a plane to catch! As we head home from a whirlwind adventure through the UK, I can’t help but think of how blessed I am to see the world yet still be excited to come home - see you soon peeps!
Etsy Sunday - Edinburgh’s Best!
Seriously! Like a freakin’ “castle” castle. On a cliff. With mist. Really people - no foolin’!
I’m almost as impress with this castle as I am with what Edinburgh’s crafters are offering via Etsy! The jewelry at Luxedeluxe is indeed luxurious, but missing the hefty price tag, while Jess Lovell’s spooky and kooky linocuts make me smile - office decor anyone?
Last but not least, Emma Lamb’s rocking crocheted masterpieces make me want to redecorate! Maybe this will be my office theme for the new place? Hmmm…
Whew! This was a hard post - there are so many amazing sellers representing Edinburgh it was difficult to choose which ones to feature! Next up, London!

Etsy Sunday - Glasgow’s Best!
The cold weather really suits me - especially when I have been sweating it out in Houston for the past few months (sorry Houston peeps - I will try and bring a cold front back with me!).
And apparently so does Glasgow. No sooner than I typed in Glasgow in Etsy’s Shop Local search bar did Asking For Trouble’s shop pop up! Cupcakes, adorable pin sets and journals that would have Happy Katie jumping for joy!
I nearly bought one of Scottish Etsian Breagha hawt ruffle bags, but then was thwarted by Mr. Sew Crafty, while another cool seller, Covetables, had me at “Make Your Own Owl Kit”
That does it for this week’s Etsy Sunday - I have a glen and a ghost tour calling my name! Tune in next week for Etsy Sunday - Edinburgh edition!
Crafts - On a PLANE!
Traveling with craft supplies can be a bit tricky these days and, since I’m going to be on a plane today for like 10 hours, I wanted to figure out what I could do on in the air instead of read Twilight (thanks a lot Erin). Soo here’s a roundup of plane friendly crafts, rules for craft supplies and other things to do on a plane. For 10 hours.
What supplies can you bring on a plane? Apparently, blunt scissors are ok, but metal knitting needles and crochet hooks are no bueno! For the full scoop, check out TSA.
Want to knit on the plane? About.com has you covered with a great article by a knitting pro!
Need a great project to work on while you’re in the air? Puffer fish barf bag puppet, Bender washcloth (thanks Patty!!) and origami from Intrtuctables have you covered!

So Long Crafters!
55 degrees. Raining. Lots of sheep. Sound like a wonderful, albeit weird dream? Nope - it’s my vacation destination this July!
The fam and I are trading 100 degree temps for the rainy and cold call of the Scottish moors starting this weekend. While I’m away, Alanna will be holding the fort down and helping you with all your craft related needs! I’m not completely disappearing though, I’ll be bringing you the latest in craft from across the pond (if the wifi holds up!)
Have a wonderful rest of July and I’ll see you guys in August!

Crafting for Craftily Challenged Pt.5
This month I took my crafting to a whole new level—a virtual level that is. While searching for my next project I stumpled upon some really great sewing blogs. My favorite one is called Sew Stylish. It’s great if you are looking for step by step pictures, completed projects, tips and tricks. If you into knitting, crochet, sewing and everything in between this is the perfect blog for you.
Until next time, happy crafting!
Happy July 4th!
Happy Birthday America! (via Craft)
*PS: Don’t forget: we’re closed today and tomorrow (July 5th) for the holiday weekend, but we’ll see you next week!

Etsy Sunday - Swanky Swell!
Anyone who comes around Sew Crafty knows how Abby and I feel about fabric - about the same as Melissa feels about yarn! So finding an Etsy seller like Swanky Swell totally makes my day - as I’m sure the awesome hand screened fabric designs and adorable pillows will make yours!
Etsy Sunday - Prince Design UK
My trip across the pond is coming up so soon I can taste it, which is why I am currently obsessed with all things UK! Nearly by accident, I came across Prince Designs UK - an adorable shop with cool ceramic bowls, dishes, brooches and home decor!
Father’s Day DIY
Did Father’s Day sneak up on you this year? Never fear! Grab the kiddos and get crafty with these amazing projects from The Crafty Crow!
Need Some Help on That Project?
You asked for it, you got it! We have finally added a class like you have been requesting - one that allows you to bring in your own project and have someone assist you in making it! The class is called Open Sew/Open Serge and the first session is on Thursday evening from 6 - 9 p.m.
The cost is $35 and it’s a whole 3 hours of help, tips and tricks! I know you’re thinking “Whoa - isn’t that like $11 an hour? That’s too cheap! What’s the catch?” No catch, just sewing, fun and awesomeness from our lovely Jenny G!
Etsy Sunday - Wiggle Perfumes
I have been thinking a lot about smells lately. That may sound weird, but, as those who know me well are aware, I have a nose like a bloodhound. I can smell cinnamon from two towns over, get a headache if anyone wearing musk crosses my path on a windy day and can’t stand more than 5 minutes in a room that has previously held anything sandalwood.
So it takes a lot to make a smell that I go gaga over, which is why I went to Etsy immediately after finding a bottle of
Speakeasy Vanilla perfume oil from Wiggle in my sister’s room!
It’s grown-up-but-still-sweet-smell, the gorgeous, vintage glamor of the packaging - this is what Etsy is all about. People who make beautiful things!
Don’t think I didn’t grab up a bottle of apricot vanilla too…

Crafting for the Craftily Challenged Pt. 4
This month I ventured into the amazing world of sewing at Sew Crafty Houston. I took my first sewing class and I can’t wait for more! The Intro to Sewing class with Abby Wright! was the perfect course for a complete beginner (like myself) and great for those needing a quick refresher. The class taught me everything I needed to know to get started in the realm of sewing— from the different types of fabrics and scissors to step by step instruction on threading a machine and sewing straight stitches.
I must admit I was a little nervous at using a sewing machine considering that that my method of sewing involved staplers and hot glue guns, but all fears were set aside during the class. The small class size and extreme patience of the instructor made it so easy to keep up. Now I’m ready to tackle another project. Any ideas?
This may sound a bit cheesy, but the feeling of knowing that I actually made something start to finish without losing any fingers or any other injury is pretty inspiring. If you want to be inspired and make something crafty come join us at Sew Crafty Houston. See our June class schedule here!
Happy Crafting!
Special Hours Saturday, June 6th!

Sew Crafty Houston will close at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6th but have no fear we will reopen at noon Sunday, June 7th. In the mean time check out our June class schedule and follow us on Facebook.
Etsy Sunday - Ugly Baby
Ugly Baby. I have been told never to even imply that a baby is less than adorable. That a response of “That’s some baby you got there” is not preferable when shown a baby. Which somehow brings me to Melissa P’s favorite Etsian, Ugly Baby! Each of these thoughtfully made shower art pieces offers great advice or warnings of impending doom - some of my favorites: who not to marry and why to stay out of the ocean next week!
This just in…
You might be thinking - whaaa? Well a Jelly Roll is a big, honkin’ roll of adorable fabric all packaged together - ditto for the Layer Cake, which is the same, but packaged as flat pieces of fabric! Crafters can use these awesome little packs for quilting or for small projects, like this one from the Moda Bake Shop!
Etsy Sunday - KnottybyNature Designs
Simple is beautiful, no one knows this better than KnottybyNature Designs. Elegant, minimalist designs like birds and nature-inspired prints make up this unique shop run by Houston’s own Erin B!
Spring Bling!
Umm hmmm - that’s right! We’re having a party at Sew Crafty on Friday night - Spring Bling! To celebrate handmade in Houston this Friday from 6 - 8, Sew Crafty will become a showcase for some of the city’s talented crafters as well as a pretty fun place to mingle. We’ll have food, drinks, drop in crafting and goods from some of the city’s best and brightest, including hosts KnottyByNature Designs and A Punkin Card Company!
Etsy Sunday - Colette Patterns
Abby has recently got me on a clothing pattern kick. That woman can sew the heck out of any apparel pattern she picks up and after seeing the items in person, I am inspired to make more of my own clothes. Which brings me to Colette Patterns, an Etsy seller with a knack for chic, classic clothing patterns. I just received the whole lot of mine and I’m beyond impressed! Now if you’ll be impressed with my final product is something different altogether…
Candle Crafters Needed!
From time to time we get to be helpers to other small business in Houston, which is pretty exciting! Today we have a student looking for a soy candle maker - if you are interested in getting connected, please contact us for more info!
Etsy Sunday - Down Home Amy!
I love anything simple and friendly to the environment, which is why I love Down Home Amy’s wonderful offering of aprons, snack pouches and lunch bags!
And Happy Mother’s Day! I’m enjoying the evening with my very own mom and our cacophony of snoring pugs. Noisy, fat dogs FTW!
Ladies Day at the Races
With the Kentucky Derby just around the corner, the girls and I could think of nothing cooler than decorating our very own hats for our Derby party! Check out the shenannigans and get some tips on hosting your own hat decorating party…
Hat Decorating Party! from Sew Crafty on Vimeo.
While we’re on the subject, making a hat from scratch would be cool, wouldn’t it? Check out our new Intro to Hatmaking class!
Etsy Sunday - singleBbeautiful
Shortly after Ryan the Gabbart and I got married, I needed a change. No no - not a change of heart or home, a new ring. Mine was pointy in places and not super comfortable to wear (although pretty). I wanted something simple and easy. Something recycled and easy on the Earth (and it’s people!) Enter Green Karat, a wonderful jeweler located right here in Texas!
Fast forward 4 years later and I’m looking a change again. Something like before, but different! Well what else do I see on the Etsy homepage today than singleBbeautiful’s simple and beautiful rings. Great price and wonderful, sustainable design? Jackpot!
Crafting for the Craftily Challenged Pt. 2
So my recent adventure into the world of origami didn’t turn out as planned, but I have not given up on crafting. In the spirit of being green and sticking with paper crafting I decided to venture into the world of stationery making. This month I made newspaper stationery. It was super easy and a great way to recycle newspaper.
I found these awesome envelope templates from a company called Paper Source (http://www.paper-source.com). Simply trace, cut, fold and voila! You have your very own hand made stationery—perfect for notes, invitations or anything you need.
Next month I will put down my paper and step into the realm of sewing. Join me for my first ever Sew Crafty Houston sewing class with Sarah Gabbart. For more information just check out our classes at http://www.sewcraftyhouston.com.

Until next time, happy crafting!
Etsy Sunday - Kit and Caboodles
I’m a kit girl. Even though I have a huge craft closet at home and a kind-of-huge craft closet called Sew Crafty, I still buy kits. Why? I have no idea - they are so cute in their package, so promising with their supplies all neatly packed in there. The photos are so hopeful with all the cool stuff you can make with said kit. Which is why it’s hard not to buy everything in the Kit and Caboodles Etsy shop!
Hem Your Own Jeans!
Hey there! I’m super excited about something totally new: the Sew Crafty Craftcast! I’ll be bringing you tutorials, field trips and all kinds of goodness - like today’s quick look at how to hem your own jeans! Check out a printable tutorial to go with the video here.

Here are some of the coolest Easter projects that the internets have to offer! Yay internets! PS: Sew Crafty will be closed this Easter so we can get out egg hunt on!

Introducing Alanna!
Crafting for the “Craftily Challenged”
Are you craftily challenged? Completely Confused? Overwhelmed by stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s? Have no fear….Alanna is here! Since joining the Sew Crafty family about a month ago I have been surrounded by creativity and craftiness and now I am ready to put some of my new found knowledge to good use.
It’s time that I take on a few projects of my own. The only problem is I have no idea where to start - I consider myself to be “craftily challenged.” So in a quest to find my crafting niche, I have decided to take on a new craft each month and bring you all along for the journey.
This month I will be taking on the ancient art of Origami. It seems like the perfect beginner craft for an on the go college student (Go Coogs!) and will make a great use for my boring lecture notes…just kidding. This site is the perfect place to start. It includes pictures and step-by-step instructions in plain English for the “craftily challenged”. So now it’s time to grab some paper and get to folding - I’ll keep you posted on what I make!
Alanna is the newest addition to Sew Crafty! A junior Journalism major at UH, she brings her love of publishing, words and her general awesomness to our shop on Saturdays and Sundays. Stop on by and say hello! OH! And if you want to learn origami first hand while enjoying a glass of wine, check out Craft Cocktails this month!
Etsy Sunday - Vanity Case!

When it comes to furniture, I’m a big fan of anything that saves space. Especially when it looks like one of the wall cabinets from Vanity Case! Each one is unique, made from a vintage suitcase with custom touches just for you. God I love Etsy - Happy Sunday peeps!
Etsy Sunday - This and That from Japan!
It’s no secret that I love Japanese fabric - it’s whimsical, colorful and of dang good quality. When Etsy started gaining steam, that’s the first thing I searched for and I was not disappointed! One of my newest finds in my quest for all things from Japan is This and That from Japan, an Etsy seller who specializes in fabric, craft books (warning: they are all in, you guessed it, Japanese) and other supplies like stamps (Patty - I’m looking in your direction… :o)
Local Artist Needs Your Crafty Hands!
Who wouldn’t want to be part of Lawndale Artist-in-Residence Kevin Curry’s latest piece, Housewarming? It’s got everything - fabric, community involvement, sewing, giant house-covering quilts - and you get to be part of the show if you drop in for the workshop tomorrow at Lawndale. Here are the deets:
Quilting Bee-hemoth
February 28, 2009
12:00 – 5:00 PM
Room 317
During this Saturday workshop, Studio artist Kevin Curry invites everyone to become part of his ongoing Housewarming project through the cutting, sewing and sorting of fabric as well as the laying out of patterns to be handed off to those sewing [either at Lawndale or at their leisure]. Three sewing machines will be on hand and anyone is free to bring their own if they wish. All participants are also invited to bring any fabric that they wish to have included in this piece. All ages and abilities are invited to become part of the social and interpersonal aspect of this event and it’s outcome.
For the Housewarming project Curry is constructing an oversized quilt to cover the entire outside of a house here in Houston. Made entirely from donated and thrift store purchased fabrics, Curry’s intention is to address the metaphorical and physical embracing of the present by the past. The quilt is sewn following a traditional ‘log-cabin’ pattern that has been enlarged fourfold. So far, over 800 square feet has been completed, with many more to go.
Curry was recently honored as recipient of a 2009 ‘Idea Fund’ grant through the Warhol Foundation Initiative, Aurora Picture Show, DiverseWorks and Project Row Houses that has enabled him to finally bring the Housewarming piece to fruition.

Selling on Etsy!
Etsy is the cat’s pajamas. Out of all the amazing craft sites, blogs and books, Etsy.com has done the most for budding crafters by offering a place for them to learn, sell their wares and buy handmade goods. In a word: it’s awesome.
New to Etsy and want to sell your crafty goodies to the masses? Maybe you have been selling for a while, but need some pointers to get your operation to the next level. Whatever your need, Design Sponge has a how to on being an Etsy seller here (via Craft)

Moms, Marketers and Crafters
Thanks to some lovely and talented internet ladies (Kirtsy, Maggie, Monica, Katie and Gwen B. to name a few) the Mom 2.0 Summit is here in Houston!! “What the heck is that?” you ask - it’s a conversation between moms and marketers on topics relevant to both: entrepreneurship, social media, awesomeness and crafts!! Word on the street is that Happy Katie will be talking about crafty moms and their impact on the blogsphere - yay for blogging, crafty moms (see Renee? You need a blog too!)!
Mom 2.0 is totally sold out for this year, but you are officially on notice for next year! Will I see you there?

Thank you mysterious stranger - you rock!!
Alright Latey McLate
